window shopping
Schaufensterbummel befasst sich
mit der Rolle von Wohnungsfenstern
als Schnittstelle zwischen privatem
und öffentlichem Raum – insbesondere
im Stadtraum Wiens. Vor allem in
Ballungszentren, wo die meisten
Menschen in Wohnungen leben,
kaum oder gar keinen privaten
Freiraum, keinen Garten oder
Balkon besitzen, dient das Fenster
als einziges Kommunikations- und
Präsentationsmittel nach außen.
Was geben wir der Öffentlichkeit
preis? Was bleibt verborgen? Was
vermitteln wir unbewusst nach außen?
Wollen wir den Menschen etwas
mitteilen, ihnen Freude bereiten, uns
präsentieren, politisch positionieren
oder unser Fensterbrett nur schön
dekorieren? Wollen wir uns gar nur
verstecken, die Läden runterziehen oder
das Fensterbrett lediglich als Ablage
verstehen? Wollen wir Intimität wahren
oder gewähren wir ganz bewusst
Einblicke in unser Leben?
'Window shopping' deals with the role of the
apartment window as an interface between
private and public space - especially in the urban
space of Vienna. Particularly in metropolitan areas,
where most people live in apartments and have
little or no private outdoor space, no garden or
balcony, the window serves as the only medium of
communication and presentation to the public.
What do we reveal to the public? What remains
unseen? What do we unconsciously communicate
to the outside world? Do we want to deliver a
message, put a smile on people’s faces, present
ourselves, make political statements or simply
decorate our windowsill pretty? Do we want to
hide away, pull down the shutters or use the
windowsill merely as a shelf? Do we want to
maintain intimacy or do we deliberately provide
insights into our lives?
